Home Chef is perfect for the average American family diet. But once you start eating gluten-free, vegan, keto, or diabetic-friendly, you find limits with their menu.
They do alert you to certain allergens in each meal like soy, nuts, wheat, milk, shellfish and eggs, but you’ll have to sift through the individual meals to find what you’re looking for.

Home Chef allows you to search for meals by cook time and meal type. You’ll notice most of the options take 45-60 minutes to cook, but they do offer the 15 minute meal kits. Oven Ready meals have quick and easy prep and they include the pan.
Every week, they offer two meals from their “Culinary Collection”, which are the fancier meals with elegant proteins like steak and scallops. These would be perfect date night at home meals. They cost an extra $4 more per serving than their regular meals.
Ingredient Quality
- Non-GMO
- Organic
- Grass Fed
- Wild-Caught
While Home Chef does not guarantee their produce is non-gmo and organic, or their meats are grass-fed or seafood wild-caught, they make efforts whenever possible to offer quality ingredients.
One example of this is their partnering with Beyond Meat to provide Beyond Sausage and burgers, which are Kosher, non-GMO, plant-based and soy-free. You can swap out your regular protein with these Beyond Meat foods when available.
Antibiotic-Free Chicken is also an option when you swap out your standard protein. It does more, but its nice to have the option.
Meal Prep & Taste
We ordered the three meals shown above, and enjoyed each of them. They were unique flavors, that any standard American family would love. The Lemon Chicken was an oven-ready meal, so everything was provided with the pan. It took about 2 minutes to prep, popped it in the oven and let it cook. Super easy!
The Szechuan Noodle Bowl was only 4 steps, and took 15-20 minutes total cook time, and was our favorite. My husband added some red pepper to his for an extra kick, but it was great on its own too.
The Tortilla-Crusted Pork Chop took the longest at about 40 minutes to make with plenty of chopping, and I dirtied plenty of pans and dishes for this meal. But we loved the flavor, and I can promise you you’ll find recipes like this one that you’d never think to make on your own.

The Bottom Line
We really liked the taste of our Home Chef meals, they were simple and quick to make, and we would definitely order from them again.Â
What we liked:
- Big 8 x 11″ recipe cards are easy to see – much better than Sun Basket’s small book style recipes that are half the size
- Unique flavors we loved
- Produce and meat was fresh and arrived in good shape
- Recipes give you “Cook Within” deadlines so you know which to make first, with generous 4-6 day window
What we didn’t like:
- Lots of plastic packaging
- Not many diet-restricted meal options
